Ridgeville man gets 30 years for killing man
ST. GEORGE, S.C. (AP) - A Ridgeville man has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for shooting and killing his step-grandfather.
WCSC-TV reported (http://bit.ly/TZoMBZ) that Sonny Ray Jones pleaded guilty to murder and armed robbery in the 2013 death of 64-year-old Jimmy Edwards.
Investigators say Jones shot Edwards in the head Feb. 1, 2013. Authorities say $44 and a checkbook were stolen from Edwards.
Investigators said Jones gave the gun over to his stepfather, Endsley Grooms, to be destroyed. Investigators say Grooms and Jones' mother, Mary Grooms, covered up the crime by misleading police.
The Grooms' pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact to murder earlier this month and were sentenced to six years in prison. They must serve five years of probation when they are released from prison.
