CHARLESTON, SC - The Charleston RiverDogs and Augusta GreenJackets played 13 innings in South Atlantic League action Sunday night at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park, but no winner was decided. Rain forced suspension of the game, which will be made up when the two teams meet again at The Joe on Thursday, June 13. The game will resume in the top of the 14 inning at 6pm until a winner is decided, and a standard nine inning game will follow.
Fans holding tickets from the game on Sunday night can exchange them for tickets to any remaining RiverDogs regular season home game this year.
The game itself was a wild affair between two teams tied for first in the SAL Southern Division. Augusta got out to an early 5-0 lead, before the RiverDogs bats came alive late and tied it at 7 in the bottom of the 7 inning to force extras. Both teams resorted to using position players as pitchers with outfielder Danny Oh tossing a scoreless top of the 13th inning for Charleston, and infielder Stephen Branca did the same for Augusta in the bottom of the same frame.
In the top of the first inning, Travious Relaford, who reached on a fielder's choice, stole second and third base then scored the first run of the game on a Matt Duffy RBI single.
The lead was quickly extended in the top of the second inning on a double by Andrew Cain that scored Charles Jones. Another run was then added on an RBI single by Brad Moss. Moss then scored on a double by Jesus Galindo (3-3). Duffy got his second RBI of the game on an infield single that scored Galindo and extended their lead to 5-0.
The RiverDogs closed the gap in the bottom of the third inning on a two RBI double by Rob Refsnyder that scored Claudio Custodio and Taylor Dugas.
RiverDogs starting pitcher Daniel Camarena was relieved by Brett Gerritse in the top of the fourth inning. In three innings of work. Camarena allowed five runs on seven hits while walking two and striking out two in another no decision.
In the top of the sixth inning, Augusta was at it again as Duffy notched another RBI on a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Jesus Galindo making the score 7-2.
Charleston added two more runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning. Saxon Butler doubled with the bases loaded scoring Greg Bird and Refsnyder. GreenJackets starting pitcher Joe Biagini was relieved in that same inning by Steven Okert. Biagini went six and one thirds innings, allowing four runs on five hits.
The RiverDogs rallied in the bottom of the seventh inning after Okert walked the bases loaded. Okert was then relieved by Derek Law who allowed a two RBI single to Greg Bird making the score 7-6. Bird then tied the game by scoring on an RBI double by Dante Bichette, Jr.
First base coach Justin Todi was ejected from the game in the bottom of the eighth inning after Claudio Custodio was called out on a questionable call at first.
