HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - A dispute over road access could detour plans by Beaufort County to create a park on the Okatie and Colleton Rivers on the mainland side of Hilton Head Island.
The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports the county last month bought 230 acres on Pinckney Point for almost $7 million.
But a judge has been asked to restrict access to the land. A landowner and a developer that once planned a development say part of Pinckney Colony Road is private. If the judge agrees, that would thwart the park plans.
Development plans were delayed for years by court battles and opposition from neighbors. There were also legal questions about ownership of the road. The lawsuit suggests the county agreed two years ago that part of the road is private.
