Rome shuts out Riverdogs

(Riverdogs PR)-

CHARLESTON, SC - Rome Braves' starting pitcher Mauricio Cabrera (1-1) shutout the 1st place Charleston RiverDogs 3-0 in South Atlantic League play Tuesday night at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park in front of 2,578 fans. Both teams are now 7-5 on the season and are tied for 2nd place in the Southern Division.

Rome began the game with three consecutive singles off RiverDogs starting pitcher Rafael DePaula. Jose Peraza (2-4, 2 runs) scored the first run on a base hit by Josh Elander (3-4). With runners on first and third Edison Sanchez hit a sacrifice fly to center field that scored Ronald Luna and gave the Braves an early 2-0 lead.

Rome added a third run in the top of the third inning on a balk by DePaula that allowed Peraza to score.

DePaula (0-2) settled in after the third inning as he allowed no runs the rest of the night. He was relieved by Phil Wetherell in the seventh inning. In six innings of work DePaula allowed three runs, six hits, and struck out seven batters.

After throwing six scoreless innings Rome starting pitcher Mauricio Cabrera was relieved by Jeremy Fitzgerald. The RiverDogs' offense struggled against Cabrera as they managed only one hit, scored no runs and struck out six times.

Charleston threatened in the bottom of the eighth inning. With one out, Reymond Nunez drew a walk and reached second base following a Danny Oh single to center field. The rally was squashed when Rome doubled up Oh on a Taylor Dugas line drive out to first base.

Shae Simmons shutdown the RiverDogs in the bottom of the ninth inning and earned his sixth save of the season.

Rob Refsnyder and Danny Oh recorded the only two RiverDogs hits of the night with one each.
