Runoff needed to determine one side of Senate seat race

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) --{} A runoff will be held on October 2 to determine who will face Democrat Paul Tinkler in an effort to grab Glenn McConnell's senate seat in District 41.

McConnell was forced to vacate the seat when he was named the new lieutenant governor.

Republicans Paul Thurmond and Walter Hundley will face off on Oct. 2 after Tuesday's special election.{} Thurmond picked up 1,544 votes while Hundley brought in 1,346.

The third candidate, Wally Burbage, got 723 votes.

The Associated Press reported Wednesday the state Supreme Court could declare the do-over primary invalid.
