Sandy Hook students return to school for 1st time since shooting

NEWTOWN, Conn. (WCIV) -- Sandy Hook Elementary School students returned to school on Wednesday for the first time since the deadly shooting that killed 20 of their classmates and six of their teachers and administrators.{}

Students will attend school at a former middle school in a neighboring town that has been refurbished for them.{}

On Wednesday, the students visited the school for an open house and to see their new classrooms and visit with their teachers to help them get acclimated to the new environment.{}

"As they walk through today. The children are coming in. They are so excited to see their teachers. The students coming in completes the circle. That's what's missing right now is getting our students back," said Janet Robinson, the superintendent of schools for the Newtown district.{}

The students were greeted with signs along the road on their ride to school, encouraging and welcoming them back to school.{}

Classes start Thursday.
