Sanford, Colbert Busch continue campaigns, add 3rd meeting

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP/WCIV) - A third joint campaign appearance with former Gov. Mark Sanford and Democrat Elizabeth Colbert Busch has been set in their race for the state's 1st Congressional District seat.

The candidates are scheduled to appear Tuesday evening (April 30) in Charleston at an event sponsored by the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce. That event will be just before a forum sponsored by the Goose Creek NAACP.

On Monday, April 29, the candidates will debate at The Citadel in an event sponsored by the South Carolina Radio Network, WCBD and the Patch news service.

Sanford, who won a runoff for the Republican nomination, Colbert Busch and Green Party candidate Eugene Platt meet May 7 in a special election to fill the seat left vacant by U.S. Sen. Tim Scott.

Meanwhile, both candidates continue to ramp up appearances leading up to election day.

On Thursday, Mark Sanford appeared in Marion Square and "debated" a poster depicting phone calls he had gotten from supporters of Nancy Pelosi. The day before, he had held a faux debate with a cardboard cutout of the House Minority Leader.

Sanford says his cell phone has been swamped with hundreds of calls this week after House Democrats sent an email telling donors to call the number.

He then held up a stack of money totaling $1,000 and compared it to the $600,000 he claims Pelosi spent on Elizabeth Colbert Busch's campaign. Sanford says he's running against House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi as much as Colbert Busch.

A spokesman for the House Majority PAC, Andy Stone, says Pelosi supports the group but does not run it. Stone says Sanford opened the door to the calls when he published his cell phone number in an ad in a Charleston newspaper last weekend.

Sanford said in the ad that people could call his cell if they have questions about a Democratic attack ad.

The Colbert Busch campaign also includes multiple stumping stops on Thursday.
