Santee Cooper to spray lakes for invasive plants

MONCKS CORNER, S.C. (AP) - The state-owned utility Santee Cooper will spray herbicides on lakes Marion and Moultrie next month.

The Moncks Corner-based utility says the aerial spraying is scheduled from Aug. 5 to Aug. 15.

Chemicals approved by the Environmental Protection Agency will be sprayed by helicopter to combat the aquatic plant known as crested floating heart.

Officials say they will spray nearly 3,000 acres of the more than 5,000 acres infested with the plant.

Santee Cooper hopes the spraying will improve lake access and recreational opportunities and help prevent the spread of the plant to other parts of the lakes.
