Save three lives by donating blood Thursday

      CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) - Every year the summer season creates a shortage in blood supplies for the American Red Cross, but the need for blood doesn't go away.{}

      "Every two seconds somebody in the United States needs a blood transfusion," said Red Cross spokesperson Barbie Schreiner. {}"So if you put that in the parameter of one day, that's a lot of blood that's consumed in the United States, so there is a constant need."

      On Thursday, Red Cross volunteers are collecting blood donations at both the Citadel and Northwoods malls. {}

      In addition to saving three lives by donating, everyone who participates will also be given two tickets to see the Charleston Riverdogs play, a box of Girl Scout cookies and a Red Cross ball cap.{}

      To donate you must be at least 17 years old, or 16 if you are accompanied by a parent. {}You must also have a picture ID. {}

      The blood drive started at 8 a.m. and will run until 8 p.m.
