SC among 12 states offering sales tax holiday

School supplies are some of the more popular items during tax free weekend.

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) -- South Carolina is among 12 states offering shoppers a sales tax break this weekend.

The sales-tax holiday extends from 12:01 a.m. Friday to midnight Sunday. It shaves state and local sales taxes from clothes, computers and other back-to-school items.

Aisles and aisles in Target are filled with notebooks, book bags and other school supplies. They aren't the only tax-free items this weekend, but they seem to fly off the shelves the quickest.

"The school supplies go first so definitely get here early for the school supplies if that is what you are interested in," said Karla Ball at Target.

But there are other items on the tax free list, some that people might not expect.

"Corsets, computers, some of the bath accessories like bath towels, blankets, we have got shoes, calculators, costumes -- that one surprised me," said Ball.

But what isn't surprising is the number of people that will flock to the store, all to save some money.

"The savings and it is at least early enough, it's still a few weeks before school starts that we aren't cutting it too close," said Julia Brown, who will be shopping this weekend. "I'll be doing a little bit tomorrow and Saturday just getting my children back to school ready maybe shopping for some clothing."

And for some, there is plenty of shopping in their future.

"Tons, lots and lots of shopping. Shop 'til we drop," said Kelsey Jones and Bailey Alexander, who will be shopping this weekend. "That's why we are here. We are scoping it out and then we are going to come tomorrow for all our clothing, busting elbows. We are ready. We are ready for tax free weekend. Making a list, checking it off like Santa."

For those braving the crowds, there are two pieces of advice: go early and bring your patience.

"Tax free weekend is really exciting. They can expect us to be staffed appropriately for the incoming crowds. It is going to be like Black Friday in August," said Ball.
