SC celebrates rural heritage, science in Florence

FLORENCE, S.C. (AP) - Clemson University's Pee Dee Research and Education Center is celebrating South Carolina's rural heritage and bounty.

The annual outdoor event scheduled for Saturday runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. It is free and open to the public.

It highlights local foods, has canoes and kayak races, bait-casting and falconry demonstrations.

An interactive learning center on the center's 1.5-mile outdoor education trail explains ecosystems in the region and the importance of resource conservation. It explains projects such as longleaf pine restoration, a butterfly garden, bird houses and a corn maze.

The center is located 1.5 miles off Interstate 95 at exit 169.
