SC farmers getting update on boll weevil fight
FLORENCE, S.C. (AP) - Cotton farmers from across South Carolina are scheduled to get together to talk about how to fight their biggest enemy: the boll weevil.
On Tuesday, the South Carolina Boll Weevil Eradication Foundation is set to hold its annual cotton growers meeting at Clemson University's Pee Dee Research and Education Center in Florence County.
Organizers say the boll weevil crossed into the United States from Mexico in the late 1800s. By the 1930s, it had devastated the American cotton crop, forcing farmers to combat it with heavy doses of pesticide. Farmers will get updates on those efforts.Copyright 2013 The Associated Press.
