SC groups unveil year of altruism, good deeds

GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) -- A group focusing on encouraging unselfish acts of good will is kicking off a yearlong challenge for people to join them in a year of good thoughts and deeds.

The group called "Year of Altruism" is unveiling its plan for events on Friday at 10 a.m. at the Peace Center for the Performing Arts in Greenville. The events are to begin this August and run through June 2014.

The nonprofit group was founded by Rabbi Marc Wilson and Robert St. Claire and hopes to encourage and celebrate altruism in thought, speech and deed.

An opening convocation is being held in August and features Rep. James Clyburn, D-S.C.

Wilson says he hopes the events inspire people to self-sacrificial goodness and celebrates the dignity of all creation.
