SC gun raffle on hold because of lottery concerns

BLUFFTON, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina Republican group is putting on hold plans its plans to raffle off an AR-15 rifle amid concerns the event is an illegal lottery.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports the greater Bluffton Republican Club planned the event where people could contribute $10 for a chance to win the rifle. Only 500 entries are being accepted and about half have been sold.

Club vice president Marcie Flynn says the giveaway has been temporarily suspended amid concerns it violates state law. The clubs says it will check with the local prosecutor to make sure it's legal.

State attorney general spokesman Mark Powell says raffles are treated as lotteries and are banned by the state Constitution. The only exception is the state lottery.
