COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina representatives are taking another week off next month.
House Speaker Bobby Harrell said Tuesday the House will not meet for its normal Tuesday through Thursday schedule May 7-9. It will be the fourth week the House has furloughed itself this year. The House did not meet one week in February. Both the House and Senate took breaks the weeks before and after Easter.
Each week that House members take off during session saves taxpayers about $50,000 in mileage reimbursement and pay for meals and lodging.
The Legislature's January-to-June session is scheduled to end June 7.
In February, the House passed a bill and constitutional amendment to shorten the legislative session by two months. Similar bills passed by the House have previously died in the Senate.Copyright 2013 The Associated Press. All rights reserved.
