COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCIV) - There is more money being put into the state's lottery account than ever before - and there are more payouts to players. It's all part of the most cost effective year on record for the South Carolina Education Lottery.
According to officials, the 2013-14 year saw record ticket sales and deposits. Transfers to the lottery account grew by $23 million last year to more than $323 million, officials said. The result was the most highly funded year ever for education programs.
The lottery commission reports more than $3.4 billion has been transferred to educational programs since 2002, when the lottery began.
But the lottery account is not the only winner. Customers playing the lottery won more than $811 million in the 2013-14 year, lottery officials said.
That means there were also record commissions for lottery retailers totaling nearly $90 million.
Overall lottery revenue resulted in more than $1.26 billion in ticket sales, permit fees and other items. This year's ticket sales outgrew last year's sales by $66 million, officials reported.
