KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. (WCIV) - There are plenty of Palmetto State golfers in the field at the PGA Championship, the one with the most expectations on him - Dustin Johnson.
The Columbia native and former Coastal Carolina golfer who lives in Myrtle Beach has established himself as one of the top golfers on the PGA Tour, but, he hasn't yet won a major. He'll gun for his first one on home turf.
"It's great, not too many majors ever played in South Carolina. Nice to play one here, hometown fans are great. I don't play in front of them too often, it's real nice" says Johnson.
Of all the fans out at the Ocean Course following Dustin, his biggest fan is inside the ropes with him. Dustin is walking alongside his brother Austin, a former Charleston Southern basketball player.
"It's pretty neat, growing up around here, coming out I played the course a lot. To have a major championship here and him being here it's really a neat experience" says Austin.
For all of the experience that Austin has on the Ocean Course, Dustin, does not.
"I played it a long time ago, a couple of times, but it was so long ago that it's hard to remember all holes. I remember a few holes, it's still a new course. I like the course, it's in great shape. The lines off the tees I see real well, so it's a great test of golf."
Dustin Johnson has come close to winning majors, he's lost one for just grounding his club in the sand. He's waited his turn, and if Dustin Johnson's turn is this week, how special it would be.
"It means a lot. Winning a PGA in South Carolina, it's a big deal. Playing in front of hometown fans is great. I have a lot of support and I'm going to have to play four real good rounds of golf."
