COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCIV) -- The South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism has recommended 21 trail programs worth nearly $2 million for federal grants. The list includes four trails in the Lowcountry.
According to the parks department, the money would come from the Recreational Trails Program and recommended for 14 counties across the state. Berkeley County was recommended for three: the Wannamaker North trail head and hiking trail in Goose Creek, the Hanahan City Park, and the Wambaw cycle trail access and improvements.
The three projects are estimated to cost $484,000.
In Beaufort County, state parks officials want to use $98,000 on the Daufuskie Island Park.
The projects were selected based on a list of criteria that included need, public support, planning and the ability to maintain the trails once they are in place.
