CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - The South Carolina State Ports Authority is again trying to sell its closed operation in Beaufort County.
The Ports Authority has been criticized failing to sell the Port Royal property that has been on the market since 2005. Critics say the failure has hurt economic development in the area.
A nonprofit group, the Santa Elena Foundation, wants to buy part of the land for an interpretive center on an early European settlement.
The foundation offered to buy less than 4 acres of the land in January. The foundation says it would promote tourism in the area.
The ports authority rejected the offer last month, saying it wanted to sell all the land in one transaction.
The authority now says it would sell the land in three pieces.Copyright 2014 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.
