SC records record number of sea turtle nests

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (AP) - Years of work protecting sea turtles is helping South Carolina log a record 5,000-plus nests so far this year.

The Sun News of Myrtle Beach reports ( that has logged more than 5,100 nests this year, up from 4,623 in South Carolina last year. That's a record for South Carolina's coast according to Ann Wilson, an interpretive ranger at Myrtle Beach State Park.

Wilson credits the growing number of nests to volunteers who regularly pick up trash, fill in holes that trap baby turtles making their way to the ocean, and encourage beachgoers to stay off the dunes that shelter nests.

Beach cleanup crews alert the state park to nests buried in high-traffic areas that need to be moved to increase chances for turtle survival.
