SC woman gets year in prison for $720,000 theft
CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - A 60-year-old Mount Pleasant woman has been sentenced to one year in federal prison for embezzling $720,000 from Bank of America.
The Post and Courier of Charleston reported that U.S. District Judge Richard Gergel sentenced Michele Gentry to 12 months and 1 day in prison following her guilty plea earlier this year.
Prosecutors said Gentry took the money over a 15-year period. She worked as a vault teller in a Mount Pleasant branch of the bank and took the money as she moved it from the vault to teller drawers and later falsified reports. Gergel called the actions a calculated and methodical crime.
Attorneys Jerry Theos and Alan Toporek said they had hoped Gentry's remorse and cooperation would keep her out of prison since she had no criminal record.
