      SCDR: Bonneau man arrested for tax evasion

      BERKELEY, S.C. (WCIV) -- A Bonneau man was arrested Friday for failing to file his income tax return.

      According to officials with the SC Department of Revenue,{} 45-year-old Thomas Smith earned taxable income from 2005 through 2010.

      According to SCDR investigators, Smith claimed exempt status for his withholding allowance and had little to no income withheld from his pay.

      Smith, who officials said has an outstanding state tax liability of $11,724, was also charged with five counts of tax evasion.

      If convicted of the charges, Smith could face up to $60,000 in fines and up to 26 years in prison.
