SC's Special Olympics team arrives in New Jersey

TRENTON, N.J. (WCIV) -- South Carolina's Special Olympics 170-member delegation arrived in New Jersey for the 2014 games this weekend.

The team includes 27 athletes from the Lowcountry, 20 of which are from the Tri-County area.

Officials said they landed in Trenton, New Jersey, to a sea of cheering volunteers and taken to Rider University, the college campus they'll call home for the next week. On Sunday, the athletes will go through the Opening Ceremonies at the Prudential Center hosted by Brooklyn Decker and Michael Carter-Williams.

The team members say in their down time they will take in a Broadway performance of Wicked and see a Billy Joel tribute band.

"Team SC is having a blast so far and we would like to say Thank you to all of our supporters at home! The outpouring of support has been awesome! Thanks again and we're going to hopefully bring home some GOLD," said Leigh Chatham, the communications director for the team.

As the games kick off Monday, the South Carolina delegation will be updating their Facebook page with competition results. Photos will be posted on the group's Twitter and Instagram pages.
