Senators may walk out of MUSC election over taxes

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - Senators are threatening to walk out of a joint session of the General Assembly expected to elect a legislator's father to the Medical University of South Carolina board.

Dr. Murrell Smith is the only candidate remaining in the election Wednesday to represent the 5th Congressional District on the board. He is the father of Republican Rep. Murrell Smith of Sumter.

Democratic Sen. Brad Hutto of Orangeburg suggested the Senate not participate in the election unless the elder Smith switches his primary residence to Sumter for tax purposes. Hutto accused Dr. Smith of using a legal loophole to avoid higher taxes at his beach home.

Rep. Smith says his mother owns the Isle of Palms home, not his dad, and they pay the lower tax rate there as allowed by law.
