Shipwreck's gold inventory released

CINCINNATI (AP) - Deep-sea explorers at an 1857 shipwreck off the Carolina coast have recovered thousands of gold and silver coins and more than 40 heavy gold bars worth millions of dollars, as well as personal items from the California Gold Rush era.
A Florida company under contract is hauling up the treasure trove this summer from the shipwreck of the SS Central America. That inventory is detailed in court records recently unsealed by a judge in Virginia and obtained by The Associated Press.
It's the first look at recent recovery efforts by a court-appointed receiver of the Ohio company that first found the gold and the shipwreck in 1988. The company and the treasure hunter who founded it, Tommy Thompson, became embroiled in a decades-long legal battle over the gold.Copyright 2014 The Associated Press. All rights reserved.
