Shooting upsets Walterboro neighborhood

WALTERBORO, S.C. (WCIV) -- Neighbors in one Walterboro community are upset over what happened there early Sunday morning.

They say a man was unnecessarily shot by a Colleton County Sheriff's deputy after a high speed chase ended {}in their yard. And now they want answers.

{}"My child got woke up by gunshots. And he was acting up ever since then," said Jessica Fulks.

Fulks remembers how her young son was stirred out of bed around 3:30 a.m. Sunday. She says her little boy heard a commotion outside their home.

That's when Jessica looked out her window.

"Police cars was over there. There was another police car right behind my house right here. I saw the boy run this way. My cousin, he seen the police right there. He jumped out of the car with his gun in his hand. With a light on the gun and everything," recalled Fulks.

Earlier, the sheriff's office says a deputy tried to stop a car for making an improper turn. But the driver wouldn't stop, leading to a high speed chase along Green Pond Highway to Beechwood Road.{}

That's when officers say the driver jumped out of the car and ran.

"We came out of the house. We ran outside. I asked him if he was alright, and he said he got shot three times," said Larry Speaks, who watched the ordeal unfold from his girlfriend's house.

The sheriff's office says the suspect pointed a gun at the deputy during the foot chase.

For now, the deputy who fired the gun is on administrative leave, and neighbors like Jessica Fulks hope incidents like these will stop.

"They just need to get to the bottom of this," said Fulks.

The Colleton County Sheriff's Office isn't commenting on what happened, but they are handing over their investigation to the State Law Enforcement Division. {}

The suspect will be taken to the Colleton County Detention Center when he is discharged from the hospital, officials said. He will be charged with pointing and presenting a firearm, failure to stop for blue lights, unlawful carrying of a firearm, aggravated assault, and several traffic violations.

Officials have not released the identity of the suspect.
