2 people hurt in drive-by shooting on James Island connector
CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- One person was shot and another was hurt during a drive-by shooting on the James Island connector early Monday, said officials with the Charleston Police Department.
Charleston police officers were called to the bridge connecting Charleston and James Island around 2 a.m.
According to a police report, the people inside the vehicle told officers they turned right onto SC 30 eastbound from Folly Road and saw a black SUV turn behind them. The victim said the occupants of the SUV started shooting and continued to shoot as they passed.
According to the report, the driver tried to shield the passenger from the gunfire.
Officials said the driver got abrasions from the shattered glass on his hand and a passenger was shot in the upper thigh. Both were taken to MUSC.
A heavy police presence was visible both on the bridge and underneath it. Units searched the marsh with flashlights and search dogs.
Investigators with the Charleston Police Department are handling the investigation.
This is the twelfth shooting in the Lowcountry this year.
