Coroner identifies female inmate found dead at Charleston County jail

NORTH{}CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- The coroner's office identified the inmate found dead at the Charleston County Detention Center, but investigators have not released any more details as to her cause of death.

The Charleston County Coroner said 50-year-old Joyce Curnell of Edisto Island died Wednesday night.{}The coroner's office said Friday the autopsy is pending.

Detention officers were making security rounds in their assigned housing unit about 5 p.m. when they found a middle-aged black woman unresponsive. She was pronounced dead at the scene, Maj. Eric Watson said.{}

Watson said Curnell seen at a local hospital for an apparent medical issue Tuesday before she{}was booked into the jail on an outstanding bench warrant for shoplifting.{}

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division is investigating the death, which is standard practice involving an in-custody death or use of force involving death, Watson said.{}
