CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP/WCIV) - American Sloane Stephens lost 6-4, 6-4 to Elina Svitolina at the Family Circle Cup Wednesday.
The 18th-ranked Stephens was upset by the 19-year-old Svitolina, who is ranked a career-best No. 35 this week.
"I tried to fight my way back and it just wasn't there for me today," Stephens said after the match.
Svitolina, who is from the Ukraine, earned her fourth career victory over a top 20 player - the third coming last week at the tournament near Miami.
Elina said she enjoyed the clay court at Family Circle Cup Stadium, saying it's faster than red clay. She said she's also enjoying meeting a lots of nice people, too.
In other matches, Daniela Hantuchova defeated Grace Min 6-2, 6-3 while Sabine Lisicki won three sets over Vania King.
Second-seeded Jelena Jankovic, the highest seeded player remaining after Serena Williams lost Tuesday, will play Wednesday night against American Lauren Davis.
