SOA students to hold art camp for elementary kids

      NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. - School of the Arts students will host their Second Annual Art Camp at the Charleston County SOA on April 1-3 from 9 a.m. to noon.{}

      The camp is for first through fifth grade students from Chicora, Mary Ford, Hursey, North Charleston, Matilda Dunston and North Charleston Creative Arts elementary schools.

      The camp is being taught by SOA students in the disciplines of creative writing, dance, vocal, theatre, visual arts and percussion. The goal of the camp is to promote the learning and love of the arts, while encouraging SOA students to participate in service and develop a strong relationship with the local community.

      "Students and staff members at SOA are looking forward to building relationships in our community while providing fun, enriching art experiences for local elementary students in a day camp setting.{} SOA's students take the lead role in this opportunity and have the privilege of sharing their artistic gifts with those who may one day follow in their footsteps," said SOA Principal Dr. Shannon Cook.

      The SOA students are members of the school's Jefferson Awards Students in Action Club and the camp is part of the club's Tri-County Youth Service Day project.{}

      "The camp allows a way for our students to showcase their unique talents and promote volunteerism in our school community.{} SOA students become the teacher and find a way to connect with their younger counterparts in the community," said The club's faculty advisor, Michelle Gorritti.
