South Carolina State placed on probation
ORANGEBURG, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina State University's accreditation status has been downgraded.
The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission of Colleges said Thursday the Orangeburg school has been placed on probation. It had been warned last year.
The association says South Carolina State has failed to comply with requirements related to a number of issues, mostly dealing with finances and supervision of the school.
Association president Belle Wheelan says the probation will last for one year. Wheelan says the school needs to demonstrate that it has enough money to operate and ensure that the people who are hired are qualified.
School president Thomas Elzey says he thinks the probation will be temporary.
The Budget and Control Board has approved a $6 million loan for the school to deal with its oldest bills.Copyright 2014 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.
