Spoleto Festival, Piccolo Spoleto unveil posters for new year

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP/WCIV) -- The Spoleto Festival USA has unveiled its poster for the 37th season of the arts festival and so is Piccolo Spoleto.

Spoleto Festival General Manager Nigel Redden unveiled the poster at Bob Ellis Shoes on Tuesday.

The poster features "Angled Ring" by New York-based artist Robert Mangold and can be purchased at the Charleston Visitor Center for $25.

This year's Spoleto Festival USA runs from May 24 through June 9. It features 160 performances by 45 artistic ensembles. The offerings range from Greek tragedy to Shakespearean comedy to modern graphic novels.

There is also a chorus singing Verdi, two original operas, Flamenco dancers and contemporary bluegrass.

The festival was founded in Charleston by the late composer Gian Carlo Menotti.

Piccolo Spoleto is scheduled to announce program information for the 35th Piccolo Spoleto Festival and unveil artwork for the 2013 Festival Posters on May 1.

Mayor Joseph P. Riley and other officials will be at Washington Park next to City Hall. at 10 a.m. Wednesday for the announcements.
