Toddler killed in accident on Spruill Avenue

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) - Spruill Avenue was{}shut down due to a two-vehicle accident that happened shortly after 4 p.m. Monday, police said. The accident{}killed a toddler and seriously injured her father.{}

Officials identified the victim as 3-year-old Tylia Hicks of North Charleston.

Police said that a pickup truck was traveling south on Spruill Avenue when it side-swiped another vehicle. The truck then left the road, hit a pole and flipped. Family members said

Three-year-old Hicks was{}ejected from the truck, police said. The child was taken to Medical University Hospital in critical condition where she later died.

The driver, Tyrone{}Hicks,{}and his wife had to be extracted from the truck. police said. They were also taken to MUSC.

Aaron Hicks said the wreck happened after his brother began to have a seizure behind the wheel of his truck.

"We are holding up by the grace of God right now, knowing that she's in God's arms right now.{} That is about the only thing that's holding us up right now knowing that she's in God's arms right now and that is basically how hard it is right now.{} You know we are trying to keep the parents uplifted right now," Aaron Hicks said.

Family members say the couple is still recovering at MUSC, but are expected to recover. Family also said the couple's daughter would have turned 4 on Saturday.

The driver of the other vehicle was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of a medical condition, according to police.

The accident is still under investigation.
