St Johns Fire District names new fire chief

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Almost six months after Chief Karl Ristow left the department, St. John's has a new leader.

The St. John's Fire District Commission has selected Deputy Chief Colleen Walz of the Pittsburgh, PA Bureau of Fire as their new fire chief.

Walz beat out over 50 applicants, including local St. Andrews Chief Mark Schrade, for the job. The selection was made with the help of Emergency Services Consulting International.

According to a press release from the department,{} Deputy Chief Walz has over 25 years of fire service experience, holds a Master's Degree in Leadership and Disaster Preparedness, along with numerous other credentials.

She currently leads the Fire Prevention Division for the Pittsburgh Bureau of Fire.

Deputy Chief Walz is expected to start on July 15, 2013.

Last November, Chief Ristow told ABC News 4 that his family got a great opportunity in Baltimore so they would be relocating.
