State seeks new buyers for Port Royal property

BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) -- The South Carolina State Ports Authority is willing to talk to other buyers for land it owns in Port Royal because the developer that wants to buy it is having problems finalizing the financing.

The Beaufort Gazette reports Thursday the Port Royal Redevelopment Group wants to develop the property. The sale was set to close by May 7, and the group has received four extensions.

Ports Authority spokeswoman Allison Skipper says a final extension expires Sept. 12. She says the authority is open to talking to other potential buyers in case the deal falls through.

Jeff Pinckney of the development group says the deal is close to being finalized.

The Ports Authority operated a port on the land from 1958 through 2004. Two earlier development deals fell through.
