Phonebank Spotlight: Stephen Ministry Program

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. (WCIV) - Those suffering from illness or injury often look to friends and family for an extra push. That motivation is sometimes crucial to the healing process and can help patients keep a positive outlook.{}Another outlet for hope many times is faith, a belief in a greater spirit. That's where the Stephen Ministry Program comes in. The nonprofit organization works under the supervision of Trident Health System's chaplain. Volunteers listen, provide spiritual support, patient assessments and referrals.One thing they don't do is convert patients. Volunteers work with people from all different faiths without trying to sway their opinions. {}Wednesday the Stephen Ministry Program will be featured on the ABC News 4 Volunteer Phonebank. They'll be recruiting volunteers to enter into a two year commitment to help. {}Before becoming a volunteer each person must acquire some 60 hours of training over a six month period.{}If you would like to begin that training call 881-5837 between 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. If you can't get to the phone during the ABC News 4 phonebank you can still call, you'll just have to dial different numbers. Those numbers are: Dial 2-1-1 or (843) 744-HELP or 1-800-922-2283.{}
