Sullivan's Island dentist takes Alford plea in sex assault case

SULLIVAN'S ISLAND, S.C. (WCIV) -- A former Sullivan's Island dentist accused of molesting an 8-year-old girl in 2011 was sentenced to probation, sex offender registration and GPS monitoring for the rest of his life.{}

According to the solicitor's office, John Cagle entered an Alford plea on a lewd act on a minor charge this week.

Police said Cagle had several people at his home on New year's Eve 2011. According to a complaint, the 8-year-old girl was molested when she visited the party.

When the girl's mother confronted Cagle, police say he assaulted her.

He was charged with simple assault and sexual assault.
