      Summerville residents 'dumping the pump'

      By Tessa Spencertspencer@abcnews4.com

SUMMERVILLE, S. C. (WCIV) -- Summerville residents who work in North Charleston and in downtown Charleston now can park their cars and let CARTA do all the driving.

Starting Monday, Charleston Area Regional Transportation Authority's{}Dorchester Road Express Route 3 began{}service in{}Summerville.

The route will run from Summerville to Charleston, Monday through Friday, during peak morning and afternoon hours.

CARTA officials say there are many reasons to dump the pump in favor of public transportation.

"You definitely can save a lot of money on gas. You can save a lot of headaches and relax while you ride into work. Often times the bus will stop closer to where your final destination is. Then, you can maybe park and walk too," said CARTA executive director Christine Wilkinson.

Among those looking to save money on transportation Monday, was a rider very appreciative of the new route, especially after recent health issues left her unable to drive.

"For years,{}I drove downtown, and then{}I had a health issue and couldn't drive for a while. When Tri-County Links started coming to Summerville, that's when{}I decided to start taking Tri-Carta and{}I loved it," said Theresa Barnes.

After picking up commuters at Dorchester Village Shopping Center, the express route makes stops at Bosch and Boeing before heading downtown.

Stops on the peninsula include the Meeting Street Piggly Wiggly, the Visitor's Center and two stops along Calhoun Street -- near the College of Charleston and MUSC.
