Summerville accidents snarl morning commute, trooper injured
SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCIV) -- Multiple accidents tied up the morning commute in Summerville Friday morning.
According to consolidated dispatch, a motorcycle and a truck got into a bad accident on Highway 17A at Old Summerville Road, shutting down both lanes of 17A towards Interstate 26.
A helicopter was called in to transport one of the victims to the hospital.
Another accident involving a South Carolina Highway Patrol trooper was photographed by the Post and Courier's Andy Paras. It ended with the trooper's cruiser in a ditch with the rear bumper torn off on Highway 176 headed towards Cane Bay High School.
A investigation by the Berkeley County Sheriff's Office revealed that the trooper was responding to the scene of the other accident at the time of his accident.
Spokesperson Trooper Bridget Wyant said she believes more than one vehicle is involved in the accident. Deputies said the trooper hit a Jeep SUV that apparently pulled out into traffic in front of the trooper's cruiser.
The trooper, whose name has not been released, was taken to a nearby hospital and then released. The driver of the Jeep was also taken to a hospital, but officials did not have information on her condition.
The SCHP will have more information on the motorcycle accident later in the day and Berkeley County Sheriff's Office will be investigating the trooper-involved accident.
