Summerville blanks Cane Bay, 28-0

SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCIV) -- The kickoff to Week 1 of high school football started with Summerville taking on Cane Bay in a redemption game of sorts for the Green Wave.

Last year, Cane Bay knocked off Summerville 10-3, so the Green Wave took to the field looking for some payback as head coach John McKissick begins his 62nd season.{}

The story of the game was defense and special teams. After taking a 7-0 lead on a 41-yard touchdown pass by Sawyer Bridges, the Green Wave defense forced a punt and Darin Smalls returns it for another touchdown.

Smalls continued to be a menace in the secondary, picking up an interception and returning it for another touchdown, making it 21-0 for Summerville.

In the fourth quarter, Bridges handed off to Jacerie Ponder for a 25-yard run for the goal line.

Summerville wins big, 28-0.

After the game, McKissick said the defense bailed out the offense, adding his team still has a lot of work to do.
