SUMMERVILLE, S.C. (WCIV) -- Coach John McKissick's accolades are well-known here in the Lowcountry.

But, his legendary career is beginning to attract attention from football fans across the country - including a documentary film crew.

The crew is making it its mission to give an inside look at not only McKissick's myth, but also the man behind that myth.

"He's a trouper," said documentary filmmaker Stephen Mitchell. "He's allowed us to really get in there; be a fly on the wall, be in the way. I'm am very appreciative. He's a legendary coach."

Just four wins away from 600, McKissick stands as the embodiment of Summerville High School football. He is a leader, a winner and a maker of men both on the field and off the gridiron.

Mitchell wants to expose that man to the world.

"I think we're going to be able to show people a different look at Coach - at home with his wife, after games. Something most people won't get to see," he said.

Mitchell and his crew have flown from New York to the Lowcountry every week this football season, to go to practice, to interview former players and to see what makes Coach John McKissick tick.

"It took him a minute to warm up to us, and not because he's not a great guy," Mitchell said. "I think he just wasn't sure what it was we were doing and why."

But it appears that stage is over, and Mitchell hopes he can place McKissick on a much bigger stage.

"We are making this film independently," he said. "We're not sure where and when it will come out, obviously, but the goal is to continue filming as we wrap up the season. Then we'll take it from there."

But no matter where the documentary ends up, it will surely be appointment television in Summerville.
