Suspect killed, 3 injured in SC home invasion

MECHANICSVILLE, S.C. (AP) - Darlington County authorities say a burglary suspect was shot to death, and three others were hurt after a break-in at a home.

Area media outlets report Sheriff Wayne Byrd said two men broke into the home Friday, assaulted two women and hit a boy in the head with a gun.

Byrd said the homeowner, who was asleep in a back room, came out and exchanged gunfire with the intruders, one of whom killed the family dog before fleeing.

One suspect was found dead in the front yard. Darlington County Coroner Todd Hardee identified him as 25-year-old Marquis Benjamin of Darlington.

Deputies arrested Brandon Lunn, who faces several charges including burglary and assault and battery.

Byrd said he doesn't expect the homeowner to be charged because he acted in self-defense.
