WEST ASHLEY, S.C. (WCIV) -- A man riding a moped down Highway 61 was killed Tuesday, after being struck by an SUV.

According to the Charleston County Sheriff's Office, the accident happened just after midnight about four miles north of the Village Green Subdivision.

CCSO deputies say the SUV rear-ended the moped which then struck a tree.

The driver of the moped was fatally injured.

The SUV driver was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The accident is being investigated by the Charleston County Traffic Division and the Charleston County Coroner's Office.

The coroner has identified the moped operator as 59-year-old Dwight Ives of Summerville.

The driver of the Saturn SUV has been charged with Felony Driving Under the Influence.

Sidney E. Son Jr.,{} 43, was charged with felony DUI while still in the hospital.

Witnesses told investigating deputies that Son was speeding, passing several cars on Highway 61 headed towards Summerville. They said it was when he got back into the right lane that he struck Ives' moped.

A traffic investigator spoke with Son and the deputy reported smelling alcohol on Son's breath and that the man had bloodshot and watery eyes.

Son was given a $52,249 bond.
