Teen arrested in attempted armed robbery on James Island

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- A Charleston teen was arrested and charged in a failed armed robbery on James Island last week.

According to police, 16-year-old William Washington was charged with{}attempted armed robbery and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime.{}

Police say the attempted robbery happened on the afternoon of Feb. 18 near Commercial Row when the victim was walking to her apartment. A man police identified as Washington approached her on a bicycle, pulled out a gun and demanded her purse.{}

The victim refused and Washington rode away, police said. Police are still investigating the incident.

Washington was being held in the Al Cannon Detention Center.
