Thousands of books lost on Hilton Head Island

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - Thousands of books have been destroyed at the Hilton Head Island library after a fire sprinkler malfunctioned.

The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports it happened Tuesday morning when the sprinkler flooded several parts of the building with water several inches deep.

The sprinkler was in the Friends of the Library bookshop, which has more than 3,500 books.

Those books are sold to raise money for the library.

The library's community room, main entrance and entrance to the children's library were also damaged. The library closed Tuesday for the cleanup. County spokeswoman Joy Nelson says the price tag of the damage is not clear.
