Trial postponed for SC attorney accused of fraud

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - A South Carolina attorney accused of extorting more than $1 million from clients isn't going on trial soon as was expected.

The State newspaper of Columbia reports that Lexington lawyer Richard Breibart's federal trial has been delayed until October. Breibart was due to go on trial in early July for mail fraud and extortion.

Court filings say Breibart's federal public defender attorney is retiring of this month and being replaced by a new public defender who needs time to become familiar with the case.

Breibart is waiting for trial in the Lexington County detention center.

Prosecutors say Breibart used false claims of criminal charges or civil penalties to trick clients into paying him for unneeded work. He faces 25 years in prison on each of the 10 counts.
