Trident Tech plans $79 million Aeronautical Training Center

NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) -- Trident Technical College is planning to construct a $79 million Aeronautical Training Center on its North Charleston campus, said David Hansen, the school's director of public information.

Hansen said the proposed facility would provide training in aircraft assembly, aircraft maintenance and avionics. It would also provide training for{}suppliers, vendors and other aeronautical-related industries.

The facility would also help grow the industry throughout South Carolina, Hansen added.

Hansen said the school owns 25 acres of land adjacent to the main campus in North Charleston that is currently undeveloped. He said the site was established in 2006 as an Enterprise Campus. If construction of the facility is approved, it will be built on that land.

Hansen said the proposal is for a 215,000-square-foot facility with 130,000 square feet of classroom and laboratory space. It would also feature a 50,000-square-foot open bay to accommodate aircraft, large parts and training aids.

The cost would also cover infrastructure, roads, utilities, parking and site improvements.

Hansen said $51.25 million, or 65% of the proposed cost, would come from the state of South Carolina. Another $18.75 million would come from Charleston County, $8 million from Trident Tech, and $1 million from the city of North Charleston.

The site is still in the proposal stage and funding has not be secured.
