NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV)--On Wednesday, traffic on Ashley Phosphate was backed up for miles as the South Carolina Highway Patrol investigated a deadly three car accident.
The wreck happened just before 4 p.m. According to Corporal Paul Brouthers with the SCHP, the accident claimed the life of a 60-year-old man who was driving a red, Honda Prelude.
"What I can say with certainty is that the red Honda that was pulling out of the parking lot didn't yield to the traffic that was already on Ashley Phosphate Road. There was the first collision which sent the red Honda into the oncoming lanes and struck by the third vehicle," stated Brouthers.
Brouthers says the drivers in the other two vehicles are doing okay. The victim's identity has yet to be released.
In a separate accident today, 48-year-old Marjorie Gariepy of Summerville died on I-26 near mile marker 196. According to Berkeley County Coroner, Bill Salisbury, Marjorie Gariepy died when she ran off the roadway and hit a tree. The accident happened around 3 p.m.
Salisbury says Gariepy was wearing her seatbeat and has ruled her death as accidental.
