Unclaimed veterans laid to rest

      FLORENCE, S.C. (WCIV) -- A memorial service for the remains of four unclaimed veterans was held at the Florence National Cemetery on Thursday.The four veterans died in Horry County years ago and their remains had never been claimed.Veterans from the American Legion, Patriot Guard and Rolling Thunder provided a motorcycle escort to the cemetery where the four veterans were cremated.In South Carolina, the American Legion is the organization that is assigned to receive the remains of unclaimed veterans. The legion has been seeking out coroners and funeral homes to find other deceased veterans who have not been claimed.A new state law had to be passed to allow this service to continue. The law absolves any parties involved of liability and allows unclaimed remains to be given to veterans organizations.Thursday's service was the second funeral service for unclaimed veterans from Horry County.
