Unique SC artisans college to find new location

CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - The United States' only liberal arts college teaching traditional building trades is working on the construction of a new campus.
Since it opened in 2005, the college has been located in the 200-year-old city jail in Charleston. The castle-like building has served as a kind of lab where students can use their newfound skills for historic preservation - but it does not have enough space to consolidate the college's iron working, stone and plastering, and timber-framing programs in one place.
College officials are working with a developer to renovate an 1897 building that was once a trolley barn to house all of the college's programs. They also plan to renovate an adjacent building to provide on-campus student housing.Copyright 2013 The Associated Press. All rights reserved.
